Five Reasons To Read & Study the Bible
The Bible, also known as the Word of God, is truly the word Himself and has been here since the beginning of time. God’s word is and will stand the test of time. His words are everlasting (John 1:1-3; Matthew 24:35). The Word of God is infallible (without error). Even history has written about things written in the Bible, proving the very existence, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
As new or seasoned believers, the Bible is a source for growing in our relationship with God and building a solid foundation in our faith (Matthew 7:24-27). Just as milk is necessary for the growth and nourishment of a baby, so is reading the Bible for believers (1 Peter 2:2).
We start with the basics of understanding who Jesus is and why He had to come (2 Timothy 3:15). As we continue to read, we grow in our understanding of who God is and get to know Him as Abba (Father). For we do not sustain our lives from bread alone, we must likewise sustain our spiritual lives by the word of God, doing so until His return (Matthew 4:4; 1 Timothy 4:13). Here are five reasons why we should read and study God's word:
Hope & Guidance
The scriptures were spoken and inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Even though the biblical scriptures are ancient, biblical scriptures are to help us learn, grow, and establish hope in our hearts. Providing a guide on how we should live, giving us directives for each day. (Romans 15:4). The Bible is full of Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (B.I.B.L. E). Literally! Shout out to whoever thought of that acronym!
Identity & Prosperity of Life
As we grow and understand who God is, we not only find out who we are and what we are created for (Ephesians 1:11-12) but by developing a habit of reading God’s word day and night; keeping His commands and obeying them; we will have success and be prosperous. (Psalm 1:2-3; Joshua 1:8). Prosperous spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Not just financially.
Wisdom & Strength
Reading the word of God does not mean we will not face trials and tribulations. Although, by reading and applying the word of God in troublesome times, we gain the strength and wisdom to respond righteously - with love and honor, holding a Godly perspective instead of responding with our flesh - anger, hurt, guilt and shame (Proverbs 15:28; James 1:19).
Mirror
Reading God’s word serves as a mirror. Allowing our hearts to grow and become reflections of Jesus Christ. The word of God helps us examine and test our hearts. (Psalm 26:2; Lamentations 3:40; 2 Corinthians 13:5). It cuts down to the bone marrow discerning the thoughts and intents of our hearts and the thoughts and intents of others (Hebrews 4:12).
Using the word to examine our hearts gives us an idea of where we are in our growth and development in Jesus Christ. Where we need to grow in some areas and where we might be hiding ill intent toward one another.
Weapon
The Bible is a weapon against the enemy. We use God’s word to combat the forces of darkness and the hidden spiritual battles we fight daily. Fighting against negative thoughts, the war between our flesh and our spirit, and attacks from the enemy (2 Corinthians 10:3-6).
When we grow in God’s word, understanding the Bible is our weapon against the enemy, we no longer have to go into battle blindly. We will no longer be distracted nor defeated by the tactics of the enemy. We will know exactly how the enemy will attack, setting us up for victory every time.
